How to Use The Medela Freestyle Pump
Let’s talk about how to useMedela Freestyle Hands-Free Pump, previously known as the Freestyle Flex. Let’s dive in!
What You Need to Know About the Medela Freestyle
The Medela Freestyle Hands-Free Pump is designed for ease and convenience, and it comes with a couple of different accessory kits. You might receive either traditional pump kits or wearable cups. Both are effective, and I’ll show you how to set up each type.
Traditional Pump Kit Setup
Flanges: These are the parts that fit against your breast and come in different sizes. Medela usually provides 24mm or 21mm flanges, and sometimes 27mm. They’re compatible with other brands like Maymom, Nenesupply, and more. Proper sizing is crucial, so check your flange size to ensure comfort and efficiency. I’ll include some resources below on how to measure. For more information on Flange Sizing read here.
Assembling the Kit:
Screw the bottle into the bottom of the flange.
The Medela kit features a combined diaphragm and duckbill valve (this is a solid yellow membrane). To assemble, pinch the white parts of the connector, lift it, and place it into the back of the flange. Make sure the flap is properly positioned to avoid losing suction.
Remember to open and clean this part after each use to prevent mold buildup.
Connecting the Tubing: Plug the tubing into the back of the motor. That’s it for the traditional setup!
Wearable Cup Kit Setup
Components:
Outer Shell: This is the main part of the cup.
Flange: Comes in sizes 21mm, 24mm, and 27mm.
Diaphragm/Duckbill Valve: This fits into the top of the cup.
Assembling the Cup:
Place the diaphragm/duckbill valve (this is the solid yellow membrane) into the cup, ensuring it clicks into place.
Attach the flap by gently stretching it over the cup without causing damage.
Ensure the parts are securely connected to prevent any issues during pumping.
Connecting the Tubing: Use the adapter to plug the tubing into the top of the cup. The tubing for the cups is similar to the one for traditional flanges but uses a specific adapter.

Tips for a Comfortable Pumping Experience
Start Low: Begin with the lowest suction level and increase gradually as needed.
Avoid Discomfort: Pumping should never be painful. If you experience discomfort, adjust settings or consult an IBCLC.
Flange Fit: The Freestyle has a more intense vibration than some other pumps, so ensure your flange size is correct.
The Medela Freestyle Hands-Free Pump is a powerful and effective option, though it can be a bit loud. Many users find it reliable and worth the investment. If you have any questions or need further help, feel free to ask. Happy pumping!
