Motif is a growing company in the pump market and can be a solid choice of pump for daily pumping use. It is durable, works with many sizes of nipples, and has a wide-array of fitting after-market brands that make this pump a go-to for pumping parents everywhere.

The purpose of this blog post is to give readers direct links to the Motif pumps and on-brand/after-market flanges and inserts based on their measured nipple size.

Motif Pumps

The Motif Luna is a heavy-duty reliable breast pump that is intended to support parents who need to express milk frequently, including exclusively pumping parents. This pump comes in two versions - one requiring a wall plug to operate, and one having a rechargeable battery for more portable pumping. Motif Luna is similar in settings, suction, and cycle options to the Spectra s1/s2. This pump can be utilized with ***all*** flange sizes and styles on the market.

The Motif Duo is a portable pump that claims to have hospital grade suction. This pump is intended for routine use, but may not be sufficient or durable enough for exclusive pumping needs. This pump can be used with ***most*** sizing options on the market currently.

The Motif Twist is an affordable, somewhat portable, pump. It is lightweight, easy to operate, but does require being plugged in. This pump is a 6v pump and is not compatible with known battery packs at this time. This pump has limited features and controls, and would make sense only in an occasional pumping situation.

Motif Replacement Tubing Considerations

Motif pumps use a generic tubing size that is similar to Spectra, Ameda, Lansinoh, Unimom, and more. Given the overwhelming popularity of Spectra Pumps this is often referred to as “Spectra Tubing” in breastfeeding groups, and when the generic tubing is listed for sale on sites like Amazon. So, if replacement tubing says it’s compatible with Spectra, it can be used with all three Motif Pumps:

Motif Luna does not use tubing adapters, and the tubing is connected directly to the pump and the backflow protectors. Replacement tubing is swapped in for original tubing with no issues.
Motif Duo uses a tubing adapter on the pump side of the tubing, but not the side connecting to backflow protectors. To use generic replacement tubing, you need to pull the adapter from the original tubing and work it into the replacement tubing.
Motif Twist uses an adapter on the pump side and the side connecting to the original backflow protector/flange set-up that comes with this pump. To use replacement tubing, you will need to pull the adapters from the original tubing, and work them in on the pump side of the replacement tubing.

So why would you need replacement tubing with these pumps?

Depending on how you like to pump, you may require longer, or even softer, more flexible tubing than what comes with the pump. For the Motif Twist, to use alternate flange styles, you will need replacement tubing. For the Motif Duo, the open end of the tubing that connects with flanges is sufficient to connect to most alternate flange styles, but longer tubing may be desired requiring replacement tubing.

Hard Plastic Flanges with Silicone Inserts

Silicone inserts were originally designed for 25 mm and 28 mm Freemie Cup Flanges, but they can be used with standard, hard plastic flanges. They fit in many brands of flanges, but some flanges less than 25 mm may NOT allow the inserts to fit flush because of the flange angles. Inserts fit in the 24-28 mm Motif Flanges.

To use this set up for Motif Pumps, Follow the Instructions for Each Pump’s Tubing:

Pumpables Liquid Flanges

Pumpables Liquid Flanges work well with the Motif Luna but not the Duo or the Twist. Those two pumps failed pressure testing, and using the Pumpables flanges with these setups results in pressure that is outside of the intended ranges and risks poor milk removal and nipple damage. Use with the Duo and Twist requires insertion of the Motif tubing adapters from each pump on the pump side of the Pumpables liquid tubing. Currently, we are testing alternative tubings for the Motif Duo to see if there is a compatible option.
