Momcozy M5 Review

A novel pump design. A risky outcome.

This is not an old school breast pump redesigned to fit in your bra. This is new pump technology designed to “suckle not pull.” Momcozy claims to have created a pump that fits the breast like a babies mouth to prevent compression of the milk ducts, and to have incorporated microvibration technology to aid in faster milk removal.

Initial reviews of this pump are outstanding - moms are blown away by the speed at which they are moving milk. It is comfortable. The vibration is just right. The pumps are easy to wear.

It almost seems too good to be true!

Thats because it is too good to be true.

This is not traditional breast pump technology that we know has the ability to remove milk and drive milk supply over time. This pump is using a gentle, sloped fit and microvibration technology to trigger letdowns - which it is remarkably effective at. What it is not doing is properly stimulating the breast tissue to trigger the hormonal signals to drive milk supply over time reliably. You can learn more about the breast pump science angle of this technology here.

So what does this Momcozy M5 do well?

  • -Comfortable pumping

  • -Less nipple irritation compared to regular pumps

  • -Easy fit in the bra

  • -Vibration that shakes just right to get milk flowing

  • -It comes with everything MOST parents will need to pump with this pump including inserts and a great carrying case.

  • -Little to no adjustment needed

  • -Great response even with irregular or limited pumping

What issues have we seen so far withe Momcozy M5?

  • -Reduced milk supply despite good response if used too frequently

  • -Microvibration can be a trigger for vasospasm in sensitive individuals

  • -Inserts are extremely short, which is okay for some parents but even low suction could trigger swelling causing a nipple tourniquet issue for the super elastic mom

  • -Premature motor failure

  • -Warranty coverage is limited and difficult to access with parents feeling unsupported (seriously read the warranty terms- this is not up to industry standards!)

Will every person who uses this pump see issues?

Absolutely not! Some milk supplies are more robust than others. Some parents are more vulnerable to issues with their breastfeeding routine. We just have very limited ability to predict who this pump will tank milk supply for. Ive been surprised by the variability in response of my clients to this technology. Some have seen devastating loss of supply. Others are loving the pump and we are just monitoring in case it starts to go the wrong direction. But all parents using this type of pump technology are at risk for finding that over time it can reduce supply by disrupting stimulation of the supply.

What to know if you are using this pump:

This new pump technology is not Proven. It’s new. It’s novel. It’s risky.

If you have already purchased this pump use it when you NEED that hands free discrete freedom. Understand it may not drive milk supply. Don’t allow this pump to be the star of your breastfeeding plan if you aren’t okay with the potential risk of it not signaling future milk production.

If you want a pump that works extremely well for occasional use this could be a good option to consider. That microvibration does virtually eliminate the issues with lack of response to a pump not being regularly used. And short term and occassionally there should be minimal risk to the milk supply. Not risk free. But minimal enough it can support your goals.

If you want a wearable you can rely on, use frequently without serious risk to the milk supply, and has a solid warranty, sit this one out. This is not a wearable that’s going to work well long-term with heavy use for most people. And when your milk supply hangs in the balance, this is a lot of money to pay for the privilege of risking your supply.
